Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can an SMSF invest in bitcoin?
Yes. Self managed super funds can invest in Bitcoin, Ethereum and all other recognised cryptocurrencies.
  • How much does it cost to set up an SMSF?
    $1,490 with a company trustee
  • What crypto exchanges are supported?
To meet ATO rules, your SMSF must use a wallet and exchange account held in the fund’s name, not your personal name. Most overseas exchanges like Binance or Coinbase don’t support SMSF accounts, which makes them non-compliant. We work with trusted Australian crypto exchanges that offer SMSF-compatible accounts and meet ATO and audit requirements: Swyftx – SMSF Crypto Accounts CoinSpot CoinJar Coinstash Independent Reserve Kraken
  • What bank account does my SMSF use? Is it crypto-friendly?
An SMSF needs its own bank account. But not all banks work well with crypto. We are unable to recommend bank accounts. You are welcome to choose your own we’re happy to assist with the administration.
  • I already have a crypto exchange account, can I use it for my SMSF?
No — you’ll need a separate account for your SMSF. One of the key rules for SMSFs is separation of assets. That means your SMSF’s crypto holdings must be kept completely separate from your personal assets, including using an exchange account that’s registered in the name of the SMSF. Using a personal account for SMSF investments is a compliance breach. It must be reported to the ATO and could result in fines or even your fund being made non-compliant. Setting up a proper SMSF account is essential — and we can help guide you through it.
  • Can you help me with wallet setup, compliance and audit tracking?
Yes! That’s exactly what we do. From choosing the right exchange to setting up wallets and tracking everything for your accountant and auditor, we make it simple and stress-free so you can focus on your investments.
  • Can I keep my crypto SMSF in cold storage?
Yes. Crypto owned by your SMSF can be stored on a hardware wallet, and this is often the preferred method for long-term, secure storage. However, the wallet must be used exclusively for your SMSF. You can’t mix personal and SMSF assets on the same device. You’ll also need to document and disclose how the wallet is stored and managed to ensure it meets audit and ATO compliance requirements.
  • Can I use my personal crypto wallet for SMSF assets?
No. The ATO is very clear: SMSF assets must be kept completely separate from personal assets. Using a personal wallet breaches the separation rule and can get your fund into trouble.
  • Can I trade frequently or use DeFi in my SMSF?
Trading is allowed if it fits your fund’s strategy, but DeFi is tricky. Lending, staking, or yield farming may breach SMSF rules if not done correctly. We’ll guide you through what’s compliant and what’s not.
  • Will my annual crypto SMSF reporting meet ATO requirements?
Yes, as long as your exchange or wallet provides the right data, we’ll ensure your SMSF crypto activity is fully compliant with both ATO and audit requirements.
  • What are the associated regulations with SMSF investing in cryptocurrencies?
In Australia, a Self-Managed Super Fund must adhere to super and tax laws, the most critical being the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act. The Australian Tax Office (ATO) is the regulator for SMSFs and the SMSF trustees are responsible for ensuring that their Crypto SMSF is compliant. For more information and to find out if your Crypto SMSF is compliant, visit the Australian Government’s official self-managed superfund website.
  • What are the risks of holding crypto in an SMSF?
As a trustee, you’re responsible for compliance, record-keeping, and managing risk. No safety net: If your crypto is lost due to theft, fraud, or error, you won’t be covered by government compensation schemes. Strict rules apply: SMSFs must pass the sole purpose test — all investments (including crypto) must exist solely to provide retirement benefits. You can’t use or display assets personally. Ongoing costs: Running a crypto SMSF involves legal, accounting, audit, and tax expenses. With the right support, these risks can be managed, but it's essential to understand your obligations before diving in.
  • Why do trustees invest in crypto in an SMSF?
Tax Efficiency Crypto gains inside an SMSF are taxed at just 15%, and potentially 0% in retirement phase. That’s significantly lower than personal tax rates. Long-Term Wealth Building Holding digital assets inside super encourages long-term thinking, compounding growth over decades, all while staying inside a regulated retirement vehicle. Full Control With an SMSF, you choose what to invest in. This means you are responsible for the investment decisions and the performance of your fund.
